Abstract: A model for calculating ice formation and ice growth in a river was applied to a part of the regulated River Oulujoki. The model was developed in the framework of a joint Finnish River Ice Project. It is one-dimensional and it calculates the heat exchange from weather data, and the dynamic and static growth of the ice cover in unsteady flow conditions. The model had been calibrated to the River Oulujoki earlier, and in this work the model was validated with water temperature measurments and six aerial surveys of the ice coverage during November and December, 1989. The results proved satisfactory for the cooling of the water and the general growth of the ice cover. Some discrepancies were found in the details of the modeled and observed ice cover growth.
