Abstract: Findings about thermal and ice phenomena convince us that the water surface temperature is of fundamental significance for the origin and development of ice on the water surface and for the heat exchange between water surface and atmosphere. This made us look for a relation for determining the water surface temperature. The heat exchange between water body and water surface is given by a known equation. The main problem is how to obtain a relation for the heat transfer coefficient. The experiments were carried out in a wooden flume of a field laboratory and in a navigation canal. The measurement results were evaluated using similarity criteria. Experiments carried out in quite different channels permitted to derive a general formula for the heat transfer coefficient and water surface temperature in calm weather.
