Abstract: The discrete element method provides an alternative to traditional analytical and experimental methods for studying river ice transport phenomena. In the discrete element method, the movement of each individual particle in the ice field is numerically simulated by taking into consideration mechanical interactions between ice particles, hydrodynamic interactions of ice and water, and the effects of various external forces. Two different techniques, namely the periodic boundary method and the upstream feeding method have been developed for simulations of uniform and nonuniform ice flows, respectively. Several examples are presented: uniform ice flow in a straight channel, nonuniform flow in a straight channel with varying flow depth and velocity, and flow in a river bend.
