Abstract: The paper describes a system that makes it possible to use the propeller streams created by the Full main engine power of a ship, to clear ice away from the ship channel or from the sides of the vessel. Air mixed into the propeller streams lifts them up towards the ice. At present, three ships are equipped with different versions of the system. In spite of the last two very mild, winters on the Baltic Sea, some very promising results have been obtained: -As the ship moves ahead, ice can be removed from the channel behind it and the system automatically becomes more effective as the ice resistance increases. -The system enables the ship to tree itself when frozen fast during lay days or when stuck in heavy ice.
