Abstract: A detailed study of the crystallography of freshwater, columnar, S2, ice impacted by a free-fall spherical projectile is presented. It is shown that the 28cm-thick ice was punched out below the indentor by grain boundary sliding along the columns. The major crack pattern was large, radial cracks and many, small, horizontal cracks which formed throughout the ice below the indentor and which were mostly intra-crystalline in nature.
