Abstract: A test system that includes a borehole indentor, a fibre-glass core auger and the associated electronics has been developed at the National Research Council of Canada to determine in situ rate-sensitivity of strength and deformation properties of freshwater and sea ice. It is shown here that the indentation process in ice and the decay of an ice cover (Dow's Lake, Ottawa) during the spring thaw can be studied using the system and the methodology developed for conducting the tests, and the analyses of results including crystallography of indented ice.
