Abstract: The theory of dynamic ice structure interaction is discussed based on the indentation tests performed in the VTT ice tank using freshwater ice. The unique feature in those tests was direct measurement of ice force separately from structural response. The indentor shape, aspect ratio and the mass and stiffness of the vibrating system were varied over a wide range. An iterative computation model simulating dynamic ice structure interaction and applying zonal ice failure concept is introduced. Results from simulation computations are in excellent agreement with measured ice force and response records in a variety of cases including crushing failure against vertical face. Preliminary results indicate that the model is also applicable to cases with inclined indentor face.
