Abstract: A series of 11 indentation tests at constant velocities ranging from 0.3 mm/s to 100 mm/s were carried out on multi-year sea ice. Contact areas were in the range of 0.2 to 0.5 m2, and corresponding average pressures ranged from 18 to 6 MPa. Significant differences in failure mode were noted in relation to indentation rate. Local ice pressures measured across the contact face were not uniform, but tended to be much higher in the centre of the contact area.
