Abstract: Total ice forces on two types of square arranged four legged structure were studied. One of such was the multi vertical legged structure (MVLS in short), the other was the multi conical legged structure (MCLS in short). An ice force model which estimates a total ice force on a multi legged structure was established semi-empirically. In a way to establish the ice force model, it was assumed that the interaction between an ice sheet and a structure could be divided into three sub-interactions in a ideal sense. It was also assumed that the sub-interactions could be deduced by the geometrical relation between a leg arrangement and an intrusion angle. Model tests on the square arranged MVLS and MCLS were performed to examine the ice force model. The total ice force obtained in the experiments corresponded the estimated one from the ice force model qualitatively. A deviation in the magnitude of ice force may be explained by the reduction factor associated with a non-simultaneous occurrence of ice failure around individual leg. It is concluded that the proposed ice force model established could estimate the design ice force on multi legged structures in the safety side, if the reduction factor is assumed to be one.
