Abstract: It is proposed that the solid fraction of spongy ice is equal to the ratio of the projection area to the surface area of the tip of the dendrites that grow into the supercooled liquid. It is then shown that the thermal balance and the shape-preserving growth requirement for the tip of an ice dendrite provide an estimate of the solid fraction. The theory indicates that the solid fraction is quite insensitive to the growth conditions.
