Abstract: The development of problem was initiated mainly by the necessity of design and construction of oil and gas production platforms for the Sakhalin shelf and the comprehensive ice investigations has been already done. The researches included the three basic directions: investigation of kinematic and dynamic features of sea ice cover and study of the sea ice mechanical properties; simulation of the ice - structure interaction and creation of design models; and development of the code rules and ice qualification of structure projects. Studying of ice environment made it possible to discover the particular ice cover dynamics and to determine its kinematic parameters, which are of great necessity for the ice load estimation. Researches of mechanical ice properties and ice features has been conducted on real ice. Besides standard compressive and bending testing of samples there were made tests on simulating the semi-infinite beam "riding up" on the conical surface of the structure. Theoretical deformation and strength models were developed for the aim of approximation of test results. The development of oil and gas fields in freezing seas and especially in the Far East brought out a problem of establishment of new class of ice resistant platforms for hard ice conditions, The great necessity in energy resources in the Far East demands to solve this problem in a short time. The project of ice resistant structure for the Sakhalin offshore is under way now. In this project the world-wide experience of constructing ice - resistant platforms in Subarctic and Arctic regions and also gravity platforms in the North Sea was taken into the consideration.
