Preliminary Results from Ice Indentation Tests Using Flexible and Rigid Indentors

Abstract: A series of ice indentation and penetration tests were carried out in the ice basin of the Technical Research Centre of Finland between November 1989 and February 1990. The tests were performed by horizontally loading a floating sheet of freshwater ice with an indentor, which was installed in front of a small structure. Maximum indentation force available was 400 kN. The parameters that were changed during the course of experiments included: indentor's shape and width, indentation velocity, ice thickness and the natural frequency of the structure. Structural response was measured in terms of displacements and accelerations, ice force and pushing force. The ice/structure contact was observed through a transparent Lexan window and pressure distribution measured with PVDF elements. The ice behaviour was monitored by measuring a far field response of the ice sheet. In this paper, the test system is described, some preliminary results from the tests are shown and a few direct observations from the results are made.
