Abstract: The results of small-scale indentation tests with freshwater ice are analyzed to obtain the frequency of intermittent crushing failure. From the experimental results, a correlation is obtained between the average distance travelled by an indenter during successive failure events and the maximum relative displacement of the indenter with respect to the carriage during the loading phase of a cycle. From this correlation, the frequency of intermittent crushing can be obtained in terms of structural stiffness, ice velocity, effective pressure, indenter width, and the ice thickness.
