Abstract: An overview of marine icing research up to mid 1988 is given. While not exhaustive, it is intended to be informative, engaging the reader’s interest, while referring him or her to other sources for detailed information regarding the phenomenology of marine icing, its measurement and modelling. The emphasis is placed on what it is important to know in order to understand, and therefore to model, the icing process on board ships. Reference is made to recent research developments in the icing group at the University of Alberta, as these exemplify the progress and problems which comprise the current "state-of-the-art. "
