Abstract: Experiments at -1C have established that end conditions/platens affect both the brittle compressive fracture strength of granular ice measured at 10-3 s-1 and the fracture mode, but have little or no effect on the ductile or peak compressive strength measured at 10-5 s-1. Specifically, radial confinement raises the fracture strength by about 10% and induces shear faulting, whereas radial expansion lowers the strength by about 10% and induces axial splitting. The variations in strength are relative to measurements obtained using radially compliant brush platens which also induce splitting. Similar effects occur in stronger columnar, fresh-water ice loaded along the columns, and are essentially independent of the length to diameter ratio from 2.5 to 1.3.
