Abstract: There are interactions between sea ice and the surfaces of structures in port engineering. The interactions are of two kinds, one parallel to the surfaces and another vertical. Friction is caused by the first. Friction tests between sea ice in the Bohai Sea and structural materials were carried out for different temperatures, loads and velocities. Materials tested were stell, painted stell, wood, painted wood and concrete plate. In this paper, the results of the test between sea ice and concrete plate are presented and analysed in terms of kinetic energy and analytic results for various materials are given. This method could resolve simply problems of selecting the kinetic friction coefficient under various loads and velocities.
