Abstract: Computational methods aimed at predicting iceberg impact loads on fixed structures off the Canadian East Coast follow either an energy or a force model and must account for the random nature of icebergs. This paper compares the energy and force models and concludes that they give the same results. It also develops a method to calculate the probability distribution of impact loads. This method is based on small scale ice strength data and data collected by the International Ice Patrol and fed into an iceberg motion simulator. A Monte-Carlo simulation is used together with a collision model.
