Abstract: Systematic experiments were conducted to determine the total ice force and the local ice pressure acting on a circular pile. In order to predict the total ice force and the local ice pressure, an elasto-plastic analysis based on the yield function of the Mohr-Coulomb theory using the finite element method was applied to a simulation of crushing failure of an ice sheet due to the indentation caused by the vertical pile when it enters the ice sheet. This paper describes a comparison made of both experimental data and calculations and discusses the validity of the application of elasto-plastic analysis to the simulation of crushing failure on the ice sheet.
