Abstract: The outlines of the Air-Sea-Ice Observation System (ASIOS) of Hokkaido University, built near the Mombetsu harbour, Hokkaido, Japan in 1986, and of research plans concerning the ASIOS are described. Measurements of the wind stress and the ice force acting to the ASIOS tower were simultaneously made from early February through late April, 1988. The ice forces acting to the tower were nearly zero during a rather quiet period. The obtained wind drag coefficients ranged from 0.0003 to 0.0022 for the ice around the tower. The distribution of the surface roughness of sea ice was obtained by using the intensity of radar echoes from sea ice, as the center of the tower.
