Abstract: Many inlets scatter along the central coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, located in the northeastern region of Hokkaido Island, Japan. Almost of them had formerly been choked at every late fall with the littoral drifts caused by the seasonal northern waves. Some of the entrances had been improved recently with jetties, revetments and open channels to keep the entrances stable. Tides are strongly diurnal and a coastal current runs eastward along the coast. From the middle of January to the beginning of April the drift ice across the sea stays at the coast, which prevents remarkably the severe winter waves from attacking the shore. Discussion is focused on the stability of some of those entrances on sandy shores in the light of unique oceanographical and histrical backgrounds.
