Abstract: The paper deals with the main characteristics of ice condition on the Yellow River, harms of ice floods and methods of forecast of ice condition. Harms of ice floods on the Yellow River often occur in the Neimonggol section on the upper reaches and the Shandong section on the lower reaches, mainly attributed to ice jams during freeze-up and ice dams during break-up. As a main non-engineering measure in ice flood prevention, forecast of ice condition on the Yellow River enjoys a long history. Emphasis has been laid on the work ever since the founding of the People's Republic of China, a system of ice condition forecasting having been established step by step, and appreciable achievements have been made. Prediction of ice condition generally falls into two parts: (1) For the period of ice-forming, including date of beginning of ice run and freeze-up, thickness of ice cover and ice jam. (2) For the period of break-up, including condition of break-up, date of beginning of break-up, highest stage, maximum discharge, etc. Various methods of forecasting are being dealt with briefly in the paper. As the system of forecasting ice condition on the Yellow River is not yet sophisticated, the paper also presents the existing problems and suggestions for further development of the work.
