Abstract: A method is presented for computing stream discharge for ice -affected periods using index stations and regression equations for the U. S. Geological Survey's stream-gaging network in Iowa. Regression equations were developed that relate stream discharge for stream-gaging stations with stream discharge at selected index stations for the winter period. During the winter of 1987-88, frequent current-meter measurements were made at the index stations to accurately determine daily discharge for the ice-affected periods at these stations. Values of daily mean discharge for the correlated stream-gaging stations were computed by using discharge data from the index stations and the regression equations, and then adjusted for any discharge measurements at the correlated stations. A computer program was developed for processing daily mean discharge at stream-gaging stations by this method. The method was evaluated by applying it to data for 30 stream-gaging stations. The method provides reliable discharge estimates when the results are compared to the hydrographic- and- climatic -comparison method, and the use of automated data processing improves the efficiency of processing streamflow records.
