Abstract: The paper deals with the formation and evolution of frazil ice jams in Hequ section of the Yellow River based on data of prototype observation in-situ. On the basis of the analyses and studies made, a model of variation of frazil ice jams versus oncoming ice flow is presented. Mathematical model of frazil ice jam based on energy equation and law of conservation of mass and method of its application have been established. As a particular example, the model has been used to derive critical conditions of formation of ice jam, the results agreeing closely with experimental findings. Discussions are also made on problems to be further studied.
