Abstract: The heat transfer between water and ice is applied during ice cover thawing and in freezing-up of the flowing water surface too. Its value is given by the product of the heat transfer coefficient Hwi. and the difference of the surface and water temperature. To determine the heat transfer coefficient, there are several formulas giving, however, extremely differing values. Our experiments indicated that the formulas hitherto used for determining H are not sufficiently precise. Based on the results of the experiments carried out in a channel and in a laboratory flume, we obtained the results in the wide range of Re and Nu that permitted deriving a new formula for Hwi. The formula derived has a different form compared to those hitherto used.
