Abstract: A discussion of the underlying causes of ice failure is presented, in terms of nonuniformity, in space and time, of ice driving forces, boundary conditions, ice morphology, or ice mechanical properties. The disparity between small-sample ice mechanical properties and full-scale measurements of ice pressures on structures is summarized and reviewed. Techniques for artificial sea spray ice construction and the mechanical properties of sea spray ice are discussed. The problems and advantages of multi-year spray sea ice barriers are also presented, and directions for future research are proposed.
