Abstract: The asymmetric four-point loading method was used successfully to measure the shear strength of columnar-grained sea ice. The tests were performed during the icebreaking trials of the R. V. ’'Polarstern" off the Labrador coast in May 1984. Brine volume, air content, ice temperature, and grain-structure effects on shear strength were investigated. Shear-strength values were between 550 kPa and 900 kPa, depending on total porosity and grain orientation with respect to the loading direction.
