Abstract: A wedge-loaded TDCB (tapered double-cantilever beam) test specimen was used to measure the fracture toughness of model ice. Crack path stability under tensile cracking conditions was ensured by way of the crack-parallel compressive stress provided by the displacement-controlled wedge loading. The TDCB specimen size and ice thickness were such that plane strain fracture toughness values were obtained. The influence of crack tip acuity and loading rate were examined.
