Abstract: Trollhatte Canal is one of the most important inland waterways for ocean-going vessels in Europe. It joins the largest lake in Western Europe to the International Sea Lanes. Lager and more specialised types of vessels are using the Trollhatte Canal, the Gota river and Lake Vanern. Ocean-going vessels with a load capacity of 3500 tonnes, a length of 88 metres, a beam of 13,2 meters and a draught of 5,4 metres are using the waterways on a regular basis. Traffic is in operation twenty-four hours a day throughout the year, but it is in winter that conditions are at their worst, and the demand for a well-organised Vaner-waterway is heaviest.
