Abstract: The main objective of the study presented in this paper is to develop a modelling material to simulate impact strength of iceberg ice. A comprehensive review of the published studies on the mechanical properties, and especially impact tests, of iceberg ice and other types of ice is presented. The compiled data were used as target values for the model ice. Two mixtures of Arctec's synthetic ice, MOD-ICE, have been prepared to simulate the properties of iceberg ice at model scales of 20 and 40. Four types of tests have been carried out on the MOD-ICE. Uniaxial compressive and flexural strength tests were conducted using a closed-loop testing machine. Uniaxial impact tests were carried out by dropping an instrumented ball on cylindrical specimens. Finally, surface indentation impact tests were carried out by hitting the surface of confined cylinders with instrumented indentors. Three types of indentors were used, viz spherical, cylindrical and triangular indentors. A parametric study was carried out to determine the effect of indentor mass, shape and velocity on the impact strength of the MOD-ICE. Another series of tests were carried out to determine the strength dependency on the model ice temperature.
