Abstract: This paper provides an analysis and summary of the occurrence of atmospheric icing, particularly freezing precipitation, offshore eastern Canada. Data analyses for the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia offshore regions and airports are presented and compared, with an assessment of the relative frequency and severity of atmospheric icing in these areas. Synoptic conditions during the events are evaluated for trends, norms, and extremes. Climatological summaries of environmental conditions during icing events are also presented. Present and future directions in the monitoring and measurement of icing offshore eastern Canada and related data analyses are discussed.
