Abstract: Experiments on equiaxed and randomly oriented Ih freshwater ice have confirmed that the unconfined compressive peak strength decreases with increasing grain size. At -10 C and over a range of controlled strain rates from 10-6 to 10-4 s-1, the strength decreases by approximately 1.5 MPa as the grain size increases from 1 to 8mm; at 10-3 s-1 the effect is greater. A model is proposed.
