Abstract: Ice-milling tests on a controllable pitch propeller, designed for a large Arctic tanker were conducted by use of saline ice. Thrust and torque fluctuation, blade bending moment and blade stress were measured at various ice speed/propeller shaft speed combinations by changing propeller pitch. It was shown that the ice-milling loads were severer for smaller propeller pitch than those for standard pitch. Examination was made on usefulness and limitation of existing methods for estimating ice-milling torque and blade bending moment. Also theoretical method to calculate the ice-milling forces based on more realistic model were discussed.
