Abstract: It would be very useful for the advancement of ice-engineering technology if there existed a quick, inexpensive way to accurately determine the strength of sea ice. The strength of sea ice is determined by its composition and temperature. This paper reports on experiments which determined both the composition and the uniaxial compressive strength of sea ice using an ultrasonic pulse. We also aim to describe the testing methods by means of the ultrasonic pulse for sea ice.
