Thermal Ice Forces Against Isolated Structures

Abstract: As ice changes temperature it tries to expand or contract. If it is restrained then thermal stresses develop. They may amount to loads of 0.2-0.6 MN m-1 across a structure. This case is typical of reservoirs and rivers. If the ice is allowed to expand then thermal ice velocities occur. This case is typical of ice lying between a coastline and an isolated structure. As the ice expands it moves past the structure and forces can be calculated by solving the indentation problem. Forces may typically amount to 2 MN m-1 for a wide structure.
