Abstract: The problem of floods caused by ice break-up of a nordic river has been studied. The observations and the measurements in situ have permitted the analysis of the mechanism of the formation of ice jams and the evolution of river ice jams in order to investigate the adequate solutions. The advantages and the disadvantages of each solution have been studied with regard to local conditions of the area affected by ice break-up. The solution of floating breakwaters with a rock dam downstream has been chosen.
