Abstract: The paper describes the latest version of the computer program entitled "Simulation of Ice Conditions in Channels" which simulates ice build-up and break-up of ice covers in river channels. The computations consist of backwater calculations to satisfy the hydraulic constraints, heat balance calculations to evaluate the volume of frazil ice generated and the major melting effects, and four ice stability constraints to evaluate changes in ice cover thicknesses. The frazil ice generation and deposition subroutine has recently been completely revised in order to simulate as closely as possible ice cover progression while frazil ice deposition is occurring in stable zones and the water levels are rising. The program has recently been used to study the ice regime on the Peace River downstream of Bennett Dam where the ice conditions are relatively unstable in this fast-flowing fluvial river. The paper compares the observed maximum water levels and the observed progression rate of the ice cover with the simulated results. Based on the experience gained to date, the program is assessed to be an effective tool in predicting formation, upstream progression and, to some extent, breakup of ice covers in rivers.
