Abstract: A large shear box has been constructed and used to determine the properties of saline ice rubble obtained from a large outdoor test facility. The rubble was approximately 1/10 the size of arctic ice rubble. The force required to shear the rubble was determined as a function of normal force, ice piece thickness, and shear rate. The test equipment and calibration procedure are described and illustrated. Test results are presented and compared with those determined from smaller-scale tests.
