Abstract: When an icebreaking vessel transverses through ice-covered waters, it is known that due to the increase in friction, a snow-covered ice sheet offers substantially more resistance than a snow-free ice sheet. This is in spite of the fact that snow-covered ice is at a higher temperature due to the thermal insulation of the snow cover. The stickiness of the snow and the resulting increase in friction is one reason why some icebreakers have a water-flushing system in the bow. In spite of its importance in the prototype system, to date, model tests of icebreakers have not taken this effect into account. The reason for this presumably is that no suitable ‘model snow’ is known which will behave in a manner similar to real snow.
