Abstract: It is shown that the approximate analytical solution derived by Kerr for the bifurcation buckling load of a floating tapered beam agrees closely with the recent numerical results for floating tapered beams obtained by Nevel and by Sodhi and for floating wedge-shaped plates obtained by Sodhi.
