Abstract: The cases of frazil ice formation in the zone of contact of fresh and salt waters were repeatedly discussed in the literature. Observations carried out in the Antarctic have shown that intensive formation of frazil ice occurs close to the ice-covered coast of the continent as thawing water flows in the sea. Similar conditions are observed in the mouths of northern rivers where the river water cooled to 0C flows in the cold sea water. The object of the paper is to reveal the causes of frazil ice formation in the mouths of northern rivers, to evaluate the quantity of ice, to characterize the processes of frazil ice formation in the mouths of rivers and to suggest possible ways of ice discharge control in the mouths of regulated rivers.
