Abstract: The ability of an ice boom timber to restrain ice floes is governed by its capacity to float and to resist being overturned. Six mathematical equations that describe this capacity for a rectangularshaped timber have been worked out and are presented here. The limits of each equation are also given. They are called righting moment equations, and from them, dimensionless values of righting moment may be calculated. The equations have been evaluated for some general conditions, for a few specific cases involving water and wood, and for one case concerned with designing a steel pontoon boom. The calculations were done by a computer program which is not included. The data provided include three graphs and two tables of dimensionless values. All in all, the information should be very useful in evaluating new designs of ice boom timbers and pontoons.
