Abstract: Full-scale icebreaking tests have successfully been carried out with the 9500 SHP icebreaking supply vessel WERDERTOR in April 1977 west of Spitzbergen. The expedition was sponsored by the German Ministry of Research and Technology. Four different companies participated in the trials. The scientific program was developed and supervised by the senior author. It included more than 10 different items. Before and after these full-scale experiments, model tests were carried out at the ice model basin of the Hamburqische Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt in order to provide data for the investigation of the similarity between model tests and full-scale trials in ice. The expedition was successful. The results are extremely valuable for future design, model testing and operation of icebreaking ships.
