Abstract: The position of ice engineering in the hierarchy of modern technology is examined. IL is suggested that on the basis of properties of the different ices that arise and the nature of the major problems, the field of ice engineering may be departed into two major categories: river ice, and sea ice. The current understanding of several major problems are examined, and the outlook for future progress in various segments of the field is discussed.
