Abstract:
The Thjorsa River and its main tributary, the Tungnaa River, in southern Iceland are unique for the enormous production of frazil ice during cold spells throughout every winter, due to the prevailing meteorological and hydrological conditions. The Burfell Hydroelectric Project was built as a run-of-river power plant on the Thjorsa River at one of the most treacherous sites for ice problems. However, the plant has been in operation since 1969 without any catastrophic troubles due to ice.
