Abstract: In this paper, an analysis that includes the effects of in-plane forces and edge moments, as well as transverse loading, on the forces which ice sheets in a flexural failure mode may exert on conical structures, is developed. The development includes both theoretical and numerical approaches. Using a form of the theory of the flexural failure of a floating ice sheet as a point of departure, heuristic corrections accounting for the end force and moment effects are obtained. A range of results based on the corrected theory is then corroborated using a finite element simulator having certain refinements over the analytical approach, including a more precise specification of the end actions.
