Abstract: In this paper, properties of sludge ice, and problems created by sludge ice in the planning and utilization of water power plants, are discussed. Our investigations show that sludge ice contains properties comparable to those of clay. This makes it imperative for the engineer to reduce sludge formation, transportation, pack-ice accumulation, and especially the formation of ice bridges and ice jams.
