Abstract: The Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research has recently designed and constructed a low-temperature flow facility for the conduct of research on various aspects of the formation, characteristics, and melting and breakup of river ice. The facility consists of a 40-foot long, 2-foot wide, 1-foot deep rectangular cross-section recirculating flume mounted on a tiltable truss. The flume is housed in a temperature-controlled room which can be chilled down to -20°F. The floor and walls of the flume were constructed from specially fabricated heat transfer plates through which a temperature-controlled coolant is circulated. A water flow may also be heated, either directly or through the boundary panels. Experience to date with the flow facility is briefly recounted.
