Abstract: An understanding of the formation of primary ice is essential to the prediction of the mechanical properties of ice covers. Certain meteorological and hydrodynamic parameters can be correlated with the texture of primary ice. A review of laboratory results is given, indicating the effects of water temperature and current on primary ice crystal formation. Its texture is correlated to air temperature at the time of formation.
