Abstract: During the construction of the Vltava Cascade from 1935 to 1962, dangerous ice barriers occurred mainly at the end of the reservoir backwater. In this paper, the passage of the ice jam through Vrane Reservoir in the course of the whole winter season in relation to the free surface area in the St. John Rapids is described. By measurements, it was found that the free discharge area in the cross-section did not change to any great extent, and neither did the velocity coefficient in the Chezy equation increase as stated by some authors (perhaps under other conditions).
