Abstract: The design of the Burfell Hydroelectric Project on the Thjorsa River in Southern Iceland was greatly influenced by the great quantities of slush ice carried down the river each winter. The approach to the evaluation of the problem is described, as well as the methods used to solve it. One winter of operating experience confirms the soundness of the solution.
